Can we become environmentally responsible while growing a business?

The time to be an ostrich and keep our head under the ground has passed… climate change, global warming, or whatever you want to call it is not just knocking at our door– it’s swinging it open with fury. In case you haven’t noticed we are at an all time high of “records” in heat, flood, fires, hurricanes, drought, and the pandemic, just to name a few. If we want to change the direction we are going, we all have a part to play. However, not everyone has the same job to fulfill. Just as different people play a role in society, so they also play a role in taking care of our planet. It’s our home, the only one we have… even if the missions to colonize the moon or Mars are successful, both places pale in comparison to all the richness and beauty our planet has to offer. So why not take care of earth?

Just as all businesses had to adapt to “the new normal” during the pandemic, we also need to adapt our business to be profitable and able to operate while also being environmentally responsible. It’s interesting to see that early adopters of this mentality are also reaping financial rewards while doing so. For instance, “working from home” has become a permanent change for some institutions where the benefits of time, cost and productivity were made evident through the forced change. Once governments implemented the lock down policy to most activities, we saw changes in society as well as in the environment. In the business sector, Zoom clearly benefited by being the right product at the right time. On the other hand, the office sector suffered as a result. Many businesses are re-evaluating their need for physical space, therefore reducing their rental expenses. For those who have invested in the office sector, the time has come to re-purpose and reconfigure the use of those spaces. For those in the building sector, the question of durability, sustainability and resistance will be at the top of their minds. The retail industry along with the industrial sector are seeing their share of changes with the accelerated pace of e-commerce, which resulted in the increased need for storage warehouses and reduced need for retail space. These are just a few examples of the challenges and opportunities that await us in these unprecedented times.

I invite you to join me in this effort and play your role by contributing through innovation, implementing recycling practices, education and/or donations. Let me hear about your green policies and I will share them in this space. We’ll explore ideas and concepts and highlight your own success stories, whether as an individual, an entrepreneur, or as a business.
